The chances are you've probably heard of Third Light and not even known it. In 2006, one of the band's earlier tracks was used on the Barclays Premier League advert that aired on BBC World; the same track was used later in 2007 for the launch of the Popworld Pulp magazine, based on the popular music television show on Channel 4.
Iodine, Third Light's four track debut EP, was recorded in July 2007, two years after the band's formation in South London. It opens with a cheerfully-optimistic guitar riff and the lyrics, "Tired of standing up and falling down, trying to find a way out of this town; it always brings me down." The band's sweeping, melodic rock sound specifically reminded me of Idlewild -- this, I consider, a great compliment seen as though I have been a great admirer of the Scottish rock band since my mid-teenage years .
'Faster Than Fiction' and 'Liars One And All' both elaborate upon this catchy pop/rock energy, which has no doubt contributed to the band's word-of-mouth stardom in and around the South London area. 'Small Acorns Grow Big Trees', however, has to be my definitive song of the four: It combines cordial writing, a sympathetic vocal tone and poignant instrumental backing to express the true feelings of four poetic individualists, who clearly have a passion for what they do.
Production has already begun on Third Light's debut album Built By Machines, coming early 2009, and judging by the band's work here, I am anticipating great things.
